Claudio Masriera's narrative piece (title ??)

It was a cold, calm night. The harbor was quiet, only the soft sound of the waves waving the abandoned boats could be heard. Yes, the harbour was suspiciously quiet that night of November. Tom sat comfortably in his cabin, reading a book. For him the life of a night-guard was delicious: he was paid for sleeping in his cabin. At times he glanced through the window, and then he would continue reading his book. He was fascinated with that book he had bought, Conan Doyle’s best short stories. He caught a glimpse of his watch. 1:47 am. Outside, there was a thick fog. He could barely see the cargo ship in front of him. Then, he continued reading peacefully.
After some time, he suddenly stopped reading. He saw that something was glimmering outside. It looked like somebody lost in the fog. It took him nearly five minutes to decide whether he should go and take a look or not. He was reading. He was only a few pages from the end of this gripping story!! “OK! I’m coming”, he told himself, reluctantly. He was looking for his torch, when, suddenly, the dim light disappeared in the darkness.
“What-ever…”, he thought and continued reading how Sherlock Homes dealt with his case. When he finished, he stopped to think; it was incredible how Holmes discovered the assassin. “Waw!”…”I wish I were a famous detective”, he said in a loud voice. “At least it would be more exciting than being here…Well, back to reality…”
Suddenly, a quick shade appeared on board of the ship in front. Tom peered through the thick fog but could not see it any more. He stared outside, for a long time, trying to see the shade again, but it was gone. “What was that? Shall I go and see?” It could be someone trying to steal something from the ship. “If I catch him re-handed, then I will be called a hero!”
He grabbed his Colt 45 and his torch and got out of the cabin. He staggered with fright towards the ship, holding his breath. His legs were shaking. “Why have I read those horror stories?”, he regretted, but carried on towards the ship, doubtfully. He tried to remember what he had seen first. It was a woman. He was sure of that. He was climbing the stairs to reach for the switchboard, when he heard a whistle. Tom stopped, suddenly. “Who is there!”, he shouted. But there was no answer. Only silence. Silence. Maybe it was his imagination…but, no! he was sure of what he’d heard. He gripped at his gun, and took off the safety-lock. Just in case. He scrutinized the thick darkness. There was something lying on the floor. Very still. He was terribly scared. He even thought of kicking the bucket! "Let's run to the cabin!" But…it was too late. Now he had to see what was lying there, on the floor. It couldn’t be! He stood up quickly. How was this possible! It was not real! It was a bad dream…a nightmare! There, on the floor, was a man in a lake of blood. “I wish I had never said what I said in the cabin!”. There was something else near the corpse…a knife! Covered in blood!!
Quickly, he grabbed his gun and aimed at the dark as if it was a silent enemy. Then, out of the blue, he heard a scream.
Whoever killed this poor man in cold blood had just committed his second crime...
